Reducers are used to alter the sizes of adjacent pipe segments. The bigger diameter usually comes before the smaller diameter when reducing.
Different Types of Reducers in Piping
There are two types of reducers

- Concentric Reducer
- Eccentric Reducer
What is the purpose of using Reducer?
- For headers that need to be lowered, eccentric reducers are useful for maintaining a consistent BOP elevation.
- To stop gas bubbles from being drawn into the pump intake, they are also often utilised at the pump suction.
- In the last instance, the flat is placed on top of the pipe run to attach the eccentric reducer.
Primary Functions of a Reducer
- To connect pipes of different diameters.
- To minimise turbulence and pressure losses during flow.
- To allow for a smooth transition in pipe size without affecting flow characteristics.
- To maintain hydraulic efficiency by avoiding abrupt changes in pipe dimensions.
Concentric Reducer
- The concentric reducer maintains the same centerline at both the large and small ends of the fitting.
- A concentric reducer is shaped like a cone and has a common central axis between the large and small ends.
- This type of reducer is used when the centerline of the larger pipe needs to match the centerline of the smaller pipe.
Applications:
- Pump discharge lines.
- Vertical piping arrangements are where flow alignment is necessary.
Eccentric Reducer
- The eccentric reducer has offset centerlines that will maintain a flat side on the top or the bottom of the fitting, depending on how the fitting is rolled before welding.
- The eccentric reducer is used in piperacks to maintain a constant bottom of pipe (BOP).
- Because pipe supports within a piperack are of the same elevation, a pipe must have a consistent bottom of pipe elevation so it can rest on each support throughout its entire length.
- Using a concentric reducer in a piperack would not permit the small diameter end of the pipe run to rest on a pipe support.
- Eccentric reducers are also used on pump suction nozzles to keep entrained air from entering the pump.
Applications:
- Suction side of pumps.
- Horizontal pipelines where the fluid contains gas or air.
- Situations requiring drainage or elimination of air accumulation.
