What is Skid in Engineering?
What is called Skid in Engineering?
Skid is a small system or process that is fixed in a structure frame. A skid can be a small process that can Compressor air, CO2, CNG, or any thing that form a process. Skid may have piping, instruments and valve arrangements in order to flow fluids inside. Sime times it can be referred as as a miniature type of plant.
Importance of SKIDS
- They can be combined to form a complex plants.
- They are prefabricated that will reduce time and costs.
- It will increase the quality of the product.
- It allow fast execution against regular upgradation requirement of Plant.
- It will reduce safety concerns and improved security.
- Inspection and testing can be done from the manufacturer It is easy for maintenance and portable.
Where SKIDS are used?
- They are used almost every industry like oil and gas, chemical processing, manufacturing units and more.
- They will be sent by the vendor as a loose component.
- They can be combined to form a plant.
- Commonly used in
- Oil and Gas
- Power Plants
- Fire Fighting Systems
- Water Treatment Plants
- Mobile Refueling Units

How Skid is manufactured?
- It is manufacture as same as the process of plant design.
- Like a plant the skid will have the same types of drawings as plant like PID, Process Flow Diagrams, GA Drawings, Piping ISO drawings.
- These are done with the help of modeling and analysis tool like Solid works, Plant 3D, Inventor etc.
- Sometimes these are fixed in an open frame and sometimes it will be enclosed inside container of different sizes.
What are the different components of SKID?
Based on the types of skid they will have different components. They are
1. Piping, Tubing, Hose and Flanges
2. Valves and NRV
3. Equipment’s such as Pumps, Separator, Filters, motor, compressor units etc.
4. Instruments like Temperature Transmitter, Pressure Transmitter, pressure gauge, temperature gauge, Flowmeter
6. PLC units
7. Cooling Systems
8. Steel Structure
9. Electrical Instrumentation, PLC units and Control Panels
